Press Release Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru C. Joseph Vijay orders permission for five box-office shows daily for seven days from the date of release, for new Tamil films, in all cinema theatres across Tamil Nadu. Representatives of the film industry met the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, on 16.5.2026 and placed several requests before him. Chief among these was a request to permit five shows per day for all films in cinema theatres across Tamil Nadu. Under Condition 14-A of the 'C' form licence issued to cinema theatres under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, all cinema theatres in Tamil Nadu are currently permitted to screen four box-office shows. Further, on local festival days or public holidays, a fifth special show in addition to the above four is permitted with the approval of the licensing authority/District Collector for the respective district, or by the Commissioner of Police for Chennai city. After deliberating on the request made by the film industry representatives, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has amended the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules. Accordingly, permission has been granted for five box-office shows per day for seven days from the date of release of new Tamil films in all cinema theatres in Tamil Nadu, and five box-office shows on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has ordered that separate permission from the Government or the licensing authority will not be required for cinema theatres across Tamil Nadu to screen five box-office shows per day for seven days from the date of release of a new film, and five box-office shows on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
