Hon'ble Minister for Public Works, Highways and Sports Development Thiru Aadhav Arjuna today, 31.05.2026, personally visited and inspected the world-class infrastructure facilities and new project works to be undertaken at the Nehru Stadium, Coimbatore district.
Speaking thereafter, the Hon'ble Minister for Public Works, Highways and Sports Development Thiru Aadhav Arjuna stated:
The Nehru Stadium, Coimbatore district, functioning under the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, is situated on 6 acres in the heart of the district. It has been built to accommodate a total of 32,000 spectators watching events at the same time. In particular, to enhance the abilities of sportspersons, this stadium has in use a synthetic running track, a football ground, a gymnastics hall, and an air-conditioned gymnasium.
At the sports hostel located here, new training batches are being started — 5 students in fencing and 5 students in road-bike (cycling) training. Through this, the total number of students at this sports hostel has been raised from 60 to 75.
Further, for the convenience of the sportspersons training at the Nehru Stadium, a new sports hostel building is currently under construction in the sports ground near the basketball semi-indoor stadium. This modern hostel, being built at a cost of Rs.7.95 crore, will provide all modern facilities including study rooms, a gymnasium, a recreation room and a spectators' gallery for the sportspersons. Minister Thiru Aadhav Arjuna instructed the concerned officials to complete this work with quality and within the stipulated time.
Following this, Minister Thiru Aadhav Arjuna personally observed and reviewed the various sportsmen and sportswomen training in yoga, pranayama, breathing exercises, asanas, meditation, handball, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, boxing, and football at the Nehru Stadium, interacted with them, enquired about their needs, and conveyed his wishes for them to achieve various victories and become accomplished athletes.
