Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Union Government for Implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, in the Presence of Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru C. Joseph Vijay and Hon'ble Union Minister for Jal Shakti Thiru C.R. Patil At a meeting held today (2.6.2026), in which Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru C. Joseph Vijay took part via video conference from the Secretariat, Chennai, and Hon'ble Union Minister for Jal Shakti Thiru C.R. Patil took part from New Delhi, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the extended implementation period of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 was signed in their presence. Jal Jeevan Mission was first implemented from 2019 to 2024. It has now been extended until December 2028, based on the approval of the Union Cabinet. Under the first phase of the scheme, with the approval of the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM) of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti and the State Level Scheme Sanctioning Committee (SLSSC), 46.71 lakh Functional Household Tap Connections have been provided in Tamil Nadu, benefiting 1.86 crore people, through the implementation of 45 new Multi Village Schemes (MVS), retrofitting of 56 Combined Water Supply Schemes (CWSS), and 21,258 Single Village Schemes (SVS). Under the first phase of Jal Jeevan Mission, the total value of approved schemes is Rs.18,123.05 crore, of which the Union Government's share is Rs.9,025.68 crore and the Tamil Nadu Government's share is Rs.9,097.37 crore. With the signing of the MoU today for the extended implementation period of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, Tamil Nadu will initially receive Rs.2,177.27 crore from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) of the Union Government, out of the total amount due to the State. The extension of Jal Jeevan Mission until 2028 reaffirms the continued commitment of both the Union Government and the Government of Tamil Nadu to ensuring safe, adequate and sustainable drinking water supply to every household in rural areas.
