Minister Anand Inspects Rs 342.60 Crore Kovalam Sub-Basin Drinking Water Reservoir in Chengalpattu

PRESS RELEASE As per the instructions of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the Hon'ble Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources, Thiru N. Anand, today (03.06.2026) personally inspected the ongoing construction works of a new drinking water reservoir in the sub-catchment areas of Kovalam, in Thiruporur and Thirukazhukundram taluks of Chengalpattu district, being built at an estimated cost of Rs. 342.60 crore. This reservoir, once complete, will be capable of supplying 170 million litres of drinking water per day to Chennai. Works such as constructing a 34-km-long earthen bund around the reservoir and installing water regulators to manage flood water are currently in progress. The Hon'ble Minister instructed departmental officials to complete the project at the earliest, without compromising on quality, so that it is brought into public use within the stipulated time frame. During the inspection, the Minister was accompanied by Chengalpattu District Collector Dr. M. Veerappan, IAS; Thiruporur MLA Thiru Vijayaraj; Chief Engineer (Water Resources Department) Thiru S. Gopalakrishnan; Chennai Region Chief Engineer Thiru C. Podhupanithilagam; Chengalpattu District Revenue Officer Thiru M. Ganesh Kumar; Water Resources Department Superintending Engineer Thiru K.
