Today (09.07.2026) at around 10.00 a.m., at the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board headquarters in Chennai, in accordance with the guidance of Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. C. Joseph Vijay, and in the presence of Hon'ble Minister for Energy, Natural Resources and Law, Government of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. C.D.R. Nirmal Kumar, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB Ltd) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras), with the objective of further strengthening the state's power infrastructure technologically, improving the integration of renewable energy, and enhancing the reliability, efficiency and quality of power services. The agreement was exchanged by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Chairman Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, IAS, and Dr. Manu Santhanam, Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research, IIT Madras.
This MoU, undertaken with the aim of modernising the state's power sector to world-class standards, paves the way for long-term collaboration to introduce new and innovative technologies in power generation, transmission, distribution and green energy; to upgrade power infrastructure; enhance efficiency; achieve cost savings; conduct Technical Expert Audits; promote Research & Development (R&D) work; and implement Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Data Analytics, digital technologies and data-driven decision-making.
Further, this MoU will pave the way for joint work across various areas, including real-time monitoring of power infrastructure, a centralised Data Centre, centralised energy accounting, safe integration of renewable energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Digital Twin technology, Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technologies, performance improvement of thermal power stations, new technology demonstration projects, and specialised training programmes for skill development of officers and engineers.
Through this agreement, IIT Madras will provide technical advice and innovative solutions, drawing on its global scientific and technological expertise, to address the technical and operational challenges faced by TNEB's subsidiaries - Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL), Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO), Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) and Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL). The agreement will also serve as a strong foundation for a long-term partnership for joint research, policy studies, technology assessments, skill development, and developing new solutions for future power sector needs. Through this, a stable and sustainable power infrastructure can be ensured, enabling uninterrupted power supply.
