I was saddened and pained to learn that, this morning (14.07.2026), a boiler exploded at a private factory engaged in extracting lead from old batteries at SIPCOT Industrial Estate, Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur District, causing burn injuries to workers present there, and that one person tragically and unexpectedly lost his life in the accident.
I have further ordered that the nine persons injured in this accident, who are admitted and undergoing treatment at Chennai Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, Gummidipoondi Government General Hospital and private hospitals, be given the highest standard of specialised treatment.
Officials of the Revenue Department, Police Department, Labour Welfare Department, Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, who rushed to the site immediately after the incident, have taken the necessary action.
I convey my deep condolences and sympathy to the family of the person who lost his life in this accident, and have ordered that Rs. 2 lakh be given from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. I have also ordered that arrangements be made to send his body to his home state at government expense. I have further ordered that Rs. 1 lakh each be given to the three persons who sustained serious injuries and are undergoing hospital treatment, and Rs. 50,000 each to the six persons who sustained minor injuries and are undergoing hospital treatment, from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund.
