Joseph Vijay launches the newly created "Singa Pen Sirappu Athiradi Padai" (Women's Special Action Force) to strengthen women's safety in Tamil Nadu The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, at a function held today (9.6.2026) at Rajarathinam Stadium, Egmore, Chennai, launched the "Singa Pen Sirappu Athiradi Padai" created to strengthen women's safety in Tamil Nadu, unveiling its emblem and a specially designed vehicle for the force. The Chief Minister stated in his order that a special task force would be created to strengthen women's safety, and that this force - with adequate personnel and modern facilities - would function across the State to help women in distress and build confidence among women and children through visible presence. To implement this order, a Government Order creating the special police force "Singa Pen Sirappu Athiradi Padai" was issued on 10.05.2026, the very day the Chief Minister assumed office. Subsequently, the Chief Minister ordered the creation of 2,545 new posts across the State for the force. Personnel for this force will be freshly recruited and given special training. Further, 319 four-wheeler vehicles and 101 two-wheelers will be procured for the force's use. Additionally, office equipment, communication devices and infrastructure facilities required for the force's efficient functioning will be provided. The Chief Minister has ordered an allocation of Rs. 354 crore for implementing this scheme. An Inspector General of Police has been appointed as head of the force. To supervise and monitor the 270 Singa Pen Sirappu Athiradi Padai field units that will function across the State, the headquarters will be assisted by one Deputy Inspector General of Police, two Superintendents of Police, four Inspectors of Police, eight Sub-Inspectors of Police and twenty Constables. The Chief Minister has ordered an allocation of Rs. 2.15 crore for this purpose. At present, 70 Singa Pen Sirappu Athiradi Padai units across the State will begin functioning with the existing 140 Sub-Inspectors and 420 Constables currently in service. The force will function under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister. Personnel of the force will identify and monitor crime-prone areas, enhance surveillance in public places, conduct patrolling to prevent criminal incidents, and create a safe environment for women in public places such as bus stands, railway stations, educational institutions and IT establishments, and other crowded, high-footfall or sensitive areas, by visibly increasing police presence and deterring unlawful activities. To create a safe environment for women and children, drone patrolling will be conducted by the force for effective monitoring and patrolling in difficult and hard-to-reach terrain. Furthermore, the force will, in coordination with agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Women's Rights, educational institutions and NGOs, create awareness and work to improve women's safety with public participation. The force has been created to reinforce the Chief Minister's zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women.
