Message of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru C. Joseph Vijay on Anti-Child Labour Day Every year, June 12 is observed as World Day Against Child Labour, a day recognised by the United Nations to create global awareness against the practice of child labour. Childhood is a sweet phase of life meant for playing freely and pursuing education in school. During this phase, it is the duty of all of us to free children who are forced by various family circumstances to go to work, and to give them back a happy childhood and proper education. Every child needs the right to live freely, the right to safety, and the right to education. Denying these rights goes against natural law and social justice. Children must not be employed in any form of work that threatens their happy childhood, and adolescents must not be engaged in hazardous occupations. The Government of Tamil Nadu's key objective is to ensure that children are not engaged in labour, that their rights are protected, that they receive proper education, that they enjoy a happy childhood, and that a prosperous future is built for them. Accordingly, the Government of Tamil Nadu has been implementing various proactive schemes to eliminate child labour. Let society and parents realise that income earned through child labour is a disgrace to the family and to the nation, and let us support the Tamil Nadu Government's initiatives to completely eliminate child labour, so that we build a Tamil Nadu free of child labour. Let us break the practice of child labour! Let us light up children's lives through education! Issued by: Director, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Chennai-9
