Statement given under Rule 110 of the Legislative Assembly by Hon'ble Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development Thiru J.A. Mohamed Sarveys, today (22.06.2026), in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, regarding the unexpected accident that occurred at a private factory located in Kanniyadeyar village, Uthukottai Taluk, Tiruvallur District
Honourable Speaker,
At the private seafood processing factory of St Peter & Paul Sea Food Exports Private Limited (Registration No: TVR08603), located in Kanniyadeyar village near Seriyavalayam, Uthukottai Taluk, Tiruvallur District, an ammonia gas leak occurred on 21.06.2026 due to an unexpected accident in the pipeline valve leading to the ice flakes generator machine.
As a result of this accident, 74 persons (70 women, 4 men) who were working at or present in that facility have been affected and are being treated after admission to Government and private hospitals. Of these, 15 persons are admitted in the intensive care unit of a Government hospital and 27 persons in the intensive care unit of a private hospital, and are under continuous observation. 27 persons are undergoing normal treatment. The Hon'ble Chief Minister has ordered that special medical treatment be given to all those undergoing treatment.
On hearing the tragic news that, unfortunately, 5 women lost their lives in this accident, the Hon'ble Chief Minister was deeply saddened, and besides conveying his heartfelt condolences and sympathy to their families, has ordered that Rs.2 lakh each be given immediately from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund.
He has also stated that the Government itself will bear the expense of sending their bodies to their home State for the last rites. The Hon'ble Chief Minister has further ordered that intensive treatment be provided to those admitted to hospital as a result of this accident.
The Hon'ble Chief Minister has also ordered that the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Scheme and Provident Fund (PF) benefits be extended immediately to the workers who lost their lives or were injured in this accident.
The Hon'ble Chief Minister has ordered the Director of Industrial Safety and Health, the Director of Public Health, and the Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to submit a report on this accident within 24 hours and a complete inquiry within 3 days.
The Hon'ble Chief Minister has also ordered that, to prevent such accidents in future, hazardous industries be immediately inspected by a committee constituted for the purpose. I inform this House, through the Hon'ble Speaker, that action is being taken immediately on this basis.
