PRESS RELEASE Health and Family Welfare Department "Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram" (Maternal Uncle's Gold Ring) Scheme Under the leadership of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the Government of Tamil Nadu has accorded approval to the "Vetri Thamizhagam" vision document schemes. The most significant scheme among these is the "Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram" (Maternal Uncle's Gold Ring) Scheme. The "Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram" Scheme has been designed to honour every child born in Government hospitals, as well as the mother who delivers the child, and a Government Order has been issued today to implement this scheme. Various schemes - including financial assistance to pregnant women, free delivery and newborn care services, emergency obstetric care, provision of nutrition, systematic hospital planning for childbirth, and the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation software (PICME) - have been successfully implemented, and these efforts have significantly improved maternal and child health indicators in the State. Under the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu's Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme, one gram of gold will be given for children born to mothers permanently residing in Tamil Nadu who deliver in Government hospitals. In keeping with the Tamil tradition of "Thaaimaaman Seer" - where the mother's brother welcomes and blesses a newly born child by giving gifts including gold - and to reflect this cultural custom, the Government will play the role of the maternal uncle for every child, and one gram of gold ring will be given as a symbol of a loving and caring welcome. The "Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam" is being implemented with the aim of strengthening public confidence in the Government of Tamil Nadu's health services, commemorating the birth of every child born in Government hospitals, and celebrating the joy and significance of motherhood. The Government of Tamil Nadu allocates Rs.755.83 crore annually to implement this scheme across the State.
