Real-Time Data Sharing with TNEB Now Mandatory for Renewable Power Plants
Energy Resources and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar announced that all wind and solar power plants must now share real-time generation data (via SCADA) with the State Load Despatch Centre, under new 2026 grid rules, since renewable sources supply over 50% of state power demand. Of over 12,000 renewable generators, less than 10% currently comply; non-compliant plants get 15 days, after which 10% of their power will be excluded from settlement, rising to full exclusion after 30 days and escalation to the Central Electricity Authority after 45 days.

PRESS RELEASE
Renewable power generation plants must henceforth mandatorily share their real-time generation data continuously with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Failing this, 10% of the power generation of such generating companies will be deducted while accounting for their power generation - information given by Hon'ble Minister for Energy and Law Thiru C.D.R. Nirmal Kumar.
Wind and solar power generation in Tamil Nadu is rapidly increasing. Renewable energy currently meets more than 50 percent of the State's total power demand. Since this type of power generation varies depending on natural conditions, real-time information is essential to operate the State Grid safely, steadily and efficiently.
Taking this into account, as per the "Tamil Nadu Electricity Grid Code – 2026" issued by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, it has been made mandatory for all wind and solar power generation plants to establish real-time data connectivity with the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) through a modern computer-based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) issued this notification to all wind and solar power producers on 30.05.2026.
Through this measure:
* The safety and stability of the State power grid will be ensured.
* Power generation and demand can be planned accurately.
* It will help provide uninterrupted, quality power distribution to consumers.
* It will facilitate more effective integration of renewable energy.
For power generation plants that do not establish real-time data connectivity, the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) will take appropriate action as per the Tamil Nadu Electricity Grid Code.
At present, there are more than 12,000 wind and solar power producers. Of these, less than 10% of power producers share real-time data with the State Load Despatch Centre. Although about 90% of green power producers were notified through multiple rounds of notices, reminder letters and high-level meetings to share the above real-time data, they have not yet shared it with the State Load Despatch Centre.
Therefore, a notice letter with a 15-day deadline, dated 30.05.2026, was issued by the Board to all renewable energy producers. Subsequently, detailed clarifications were provided to address the doubts of power producers and various stakeholders.
Furthermore, due to legal and technical reasons such as continued insistence by the Central Government's Southern Regional Power Committee (SRPC) and the Grid Code, it has not been possible to extend the deadline further.
Therefore, SCADA real-time data must be fully integrated within 15 days of receiving the notice. Failing this, as a first step, 10% of power generation, and after 30 days, the entire power generation, will be excluded from power despatch and deviation settlement accounting procedures.
If the data is still not integrated even after 45 days, the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC), as per the regulations of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), will take appropriate further action and inform the Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Accordingly, the power accounting and reconciliation work for the month of June 2026 will be carried out by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL). Therefore, all wind and solar power producers are requested to immediately establish real-time data connectivity and extend their full cooperation towards the safety of the State power grid and reliable power distribution.
