Dr. Ambedkar Law University Cancels Provisional Affiliation of Three Private Law Colleges
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University cancelled the provisional affiliation of three private law colleges — Tulasi Women's Law College, Thoothukudi; S. Thangapazham Law College, Tenkasi; and Mugil Law College, Kanniyakumari — for admitting additional students without the required Bar Council of India approval, in violation of university regulations. A committee has been formed to protect the interests of affected students. Tulasi Women's Law College's renewal application for 2026-27 was also rejected.

PRESS RELEASE
General Notice regarding Affiliation Norms of Private Law Colleges affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University.
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (Affiliation and Recognition of Law Colleges) Regulations mandate that law colleges strictly adhere to certain procedures. Further, admission of students to law colleges is governed by these Regulations, Government Orders, and approval of the Bar Council of India. Based on the above regulatory rules, provisional affiliation for the academic year 2025-2026 was granted to the following private law colleges:
(1) Tulasi Women's Law College, Thoothukudi District
(2) S. Thangapazham Law College, Tenkasi District
(3) Mugil Law College, Kanniyakumari District
On the basis of this provisional affiliation, the colleges are also required to obtain approval of the Bar Council of India. Although provisional affiliation for the academic year 2025-2026 was granted, the above colleges were unable to secure the approval of the Bar Council of India. After the "Moratorium period" ended, approval was finally granted by the Bar Council of India only in April 2026.
University regulations and the terms of provisional affiliation clearly stipulate that colleges shall not admit students merely in anticipation of receiving Bar Council of India approval; admissions may proceed only after all approvals have been obtained. Further, as regards Government Quota, admission is regulated by Government Order and is required to form part of the University's counselling process. It is notable that, for the academic year 2025-2026, the above private law colleges were not included for additional seats in this University's counselling process. Hence, the claim of these colleges to have admitted students is contrary to the regulations.
Since the Regulatory Rules and the directive of the Bar Council of India have been clearly violated, as per the resolution of the University Syndicate, appropriate action has been taken against the private law colleges — (1) Tulasi Women's Law College, Thoothukudi District, (2) S. Thangapazham Law College, Tenkasi District, and (3) Mugil Law College, Kanniyakumari District — and the provisional affiliation for additional student admissions has also been cancelled.
Further, the University's Governing Council has resolved not to consider the application submitted by Tulasi Women's Law College, functioning in Thoothukudi District, seeking extension of provisional affiliation for the academic year 2026-2027.
The welfare of students admitted in previous academic years within the sanctioned intake of these colleges has also been taken into consideration, through the constitution of a committee, as per the Syndicate's resolutions, to recommend appropriate remedial measures for such students.
