Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. C. Joseph Vijay inspects the functioning of the 45-MLD Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant at Koyambedu, run by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. C. Joseph Vijay, today (27.07.2026), on behalf of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), visited and inspected the functioning of the 45 Million Litres per Day (MLD) capacity Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant at Koyambedu, Chennai. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board manages sewage through 438 sewage pumping stations and 22 sewage treatment plants. In order to secure Chennai's water security and implement a Circular Water Economy, TTRO plants with a capacity of 45 MLD each have been set up at Koyambedu and Kodungaiyur. These two plants together treat 90 MLD of wastewater daily. The primary objective of this project is to further purify secondary-treated wastewater to a higher quality standard suitable for use by industries. This reduces the reliance on drinking water and groundwater, creates a reliable alternative water source for industries, and ensures Chennai's long-term water security. 45 MLD of high-quality recycled water is being supplied to industries daily. As a result, the drinking water that was earlier supplied for industrial use is now being redirected to meet the public's drinking water needs. This has significantly reduced groundwater extraction, while the use of recycled water for the construction industry, ready-mix concrete (RMC) and concrete block manufacturing units has also been expanded. This project delivers multiple environmental, economic and social benefits. Freshwater resources are conserved and wastewater discharge is reduced. Groundwater and natural water bodies are protected, and Chennai's resilience to climate change is enhanced. A reliable alternative water source for industries promotes industrial growth, while additional water availability for drinking purposes improves public water security. The TTRO plants operating at Koyambedu and Kodungaiyur convert wastewater into a valuable resource, implement the Circular Water Economy, and make a significant contribution towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. During the inspection, Government Chief Whip Thiru. Ra. Saverinathan, Additional Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, Thiru. Gyandeep Singh Bedi, IAS, Managing Director, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Thiru. T. Anand, IAS, Engineering Director, Chennai Metro Water, Tmt. U. Sarveish, Chief Engineers Thiru. A. Radhakrishnan and Tmt. Ku. Va. Vaigadevi, and senior government officials were present.
