Joseph Vijay on the birth anniversary of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy On the birth anniversary of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy — Tamil Nadu's first woman doctor, and the first woman to be elected to the Madras Legislative Council in 1927, who dedicated her life to women's education, rights and social advancement, and to the welfare of the poor and underprivileged — I recall and honour her monumental service! Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy established remarkable institutions such as the Avvai Home, a refuge for destitute women and children, and the Adyar Cancer Institute, a beacon of life for cancer patients, and was the social reformer who laid the foundation for the Child Marriage Restraint Act. Her lofty ideals, initiatives for women's advancement, humanitarian work and selfless dedication will forever remain etched in Tamil soil, across generations!
