Press Release Finance (FDAU) Department First meeting of Revenue Augmentation Committee The Government of Tamil Nadu has constituted a Revenue Augmentation Committee, chaired by Thiru Montek Singh Ahluwalia, eminent economist and former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India, to advise the Government on measures to augment the State's own tax and non-tax revenues, identify new and under-tapped sources of revenue, plug leakages and improve compliance in revenue-collecting departments, and enhance revenue through regulatory and taxation reform. The preliminary meeting of the Committee was held today, the 31st July 2026, through video conference. In the meeting, the Committee discussed its Terms of Reference and the manner in which it proposes to take forward its work. The Committee will be supported by a dedicated research team drawn from the Tax Policy Research Unit and the Financial Data Analytics Unit of the Finance Department, and will draw upon the experience of other States and established practices in public finance. It will frame its recommendations across short-term, medium-term and long-term measures. The Committee decided to commence its deliberations at the earliest, starting with a physical meeting in August 2026. It also decided that it would meet relevant stakeholders and invite inputs through e-mail in the course of its work, so that its recommendations reflect a balanced and comprehensive assessment.
