Water release ordered from Periyar Dam for Theni-Madurai irrigation, drinking water

PRESS RELEASE In accordance with the orders of Hon'ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru S. Joseph Vijay, the Government of Tamil Nadu has ordered the release of water from the Periyar Dam, from 08.08.2026 for 120 days, at the rate of 350 cusecs — comprising 200 cusecs for the first crop season for 14,707 acres of land in the two-crop ayacut areas of Kambam Valley, Theni district, and 150 cusecs for the drinking water requirements of Theni district and Madurai Corporation — subject to a maximum total of 3,629 million cubic feet, to be released as required depending on inflow and/or storage availability. 2. Through this, 14,707 acres of land in Uthamapalayam, Theni and Bodinayakanur taluks of Theni district will receive irrigation facility. Secretary to Government, Water Resources Department.
