The Tamil Nadu Government Transport Corporations operate approximately 21,515 buses through 26 zones and 317 depots, meeting the transportation needs of about 2.02 crore members of the public daily, making it a major public service organisation.
In accordance with the directions of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and following the guidance of the Hon'ble Minister for Transport, a consultative meeting with bus manufacturing companies was held today (04.08.2026) under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Transport Department. At this meeting, detailed discussions were held on ensuring transparency in the procurement of electric buses and ensuring the participation of a larger number of manufacturing companies. Discussions were also held on framing the rules to be prescribed while preparing tender conditions in order to ensure this.
Discussions were held on streamlining the tender conditions so as to enable a greater number of eligible companies to participate and to procure quality buses at competitive prices. The Secretary of the Transport Department also advised transport department officials to expedite the procurement of buses in order to bring an improved transport service to the public. Further, the concerned bus manufacturing companies were advised to deliver buses to the Transport Corporations at the earliest, as per the procurement orders already issued.
The meeting was attended by Managing Director of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation Thiru T. Mohan, IAS, senior officials of the department, and representatives of the companies concerned.
