The renovated synthetic athletic track, developed at a cost of Rs.8 crore by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority at the Integrated Sports Complex of the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai, was inaugurated today (13.08.2026) by the Hon'ble Minister for Public Works and Sports Development, Thiru Adhav Arjuna. This athletic track has been upgraded into a synthetic track to provide Tamil Nadu's sportspersons with training facilities equivalent to national and international standards.
With the aim of expanding sports infrastructure facilities across every district, work is underway to establish new synthetic athletic tracks in three districts — Ramanathapuram, Salem, and Cuddalore — at a cost of Rs.38.24 crore. Synthetic athletic tracks have already been established and are in use in nine districts: Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, Nilgiris, Erode, and Thanjavur.
Over the past three months, the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority has inaugurated, at a cost of Rs.31 crore, athletics throwing centres, synthetic hockey fields, para-sports arenas, Chief Minister's Youth Sports Arenas, and swimming pools in the districts of Chennai, Ariyalur, Tiruvannamalai, Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Virudhunagar, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, and Thoothukudi.
The event was attended by the Government Secretary for Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, Thiru Sandeep Nanduri, IAS, Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, Thiru J. Meghanath Reddy, IAS, District Revenue Officer Thiru Ra. Suman, General Manager Tmt. L. Sujatha, Executive Engineer Thiru Pushpalingam, and other government officials.
