At present, 383 Amma Unavagams are functioning through the Greater Chennai Corporation, and 237 Amma Unavagams are functioning through other Corporations and Municipalities across Tamil Nadu.

Following reports brought to the notice of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu that the quality and taste of food served at these canteens has not been satisfactory in recent times, the Hon'ble Chief Minister, after consulting with the concerned Government department secretaries, has ordered that the infrastructure facilities required for the Amma Unavagams be upgraded, that cooking equipment be procured immediately, and that tasty, quality food be served to the public without interruption.

The Hon'ble Chief Minister has ordered that the expenditure for this renovation and for procurement of materials be met from the general funds of the Corporations and Municipalities.
